5 Signs Your Grandparent’s “Junk Drawer” Coins Might Be Worth Real Money

Every estate has one — a drawer, a coffee can, a cigar box of “just old coins” nobody’s looked at closely. Most of the time, it really is just old coins. But a few signs are worth checking before it goes in a sale or gets spent at face value.

1. Anything Pre-1965

U.S. dimes, quarters, and half dollars minted before 1965 are 90% silver — worth several times face value in silver content alone, before any collector premium is even considered.

2. Wheat Pennies and Buffalo Nickels

Not usually valuable individually, but worth sorting out and checking dates — some years and mint marks are genuinely scarce and worth well above face value.

3. Anything Kept Separately

A coin someone bothered to put in an envelope, a small holder, or a labeled folder was probably kept that way for a reason — even if that reason isn’t obvious now.

4. Uncirculated-Looking Coins from Rolls or Bags

Coins that still look sharp and shiny, especially in original bank rolls or mint packaging, deserve a second look before anyone assumes they’re just spending money.

5. Anything That Doesn’t Look “American”

Foreign coins, especially older gold or silver pieces, get overlooked constantly in estates — they’re worth identifying rather than tossing in with the pocket change.

If in Doubt

Don’t sort it yourself and don’t sell it to the first offer — get an in-hand look from someone who does this daily. See our guide on what to do with an inherited coin collection for the fuller picture.
